How Paint Color Can Affect Your Mood

There might be more than aesthetic appeal to consider when choosing a new color to paint your walls. Whether it’s your bedroom, kitchen or sitting room, if you’re going to be spending considerable time in a room then you should be aware of its potential effects on your mood. Psychologically, certain colors have a tendency to make us feel certain ways — and in addition to the look, it is important to consider the feel of your home as well.

Red

Traditionally, red is all about energy. Used as the focal point in bullfights and archery targets, red creates excitement and stimulation. In a kitchen or living room, a red accent wall can generate conversation and add a sizzle to the atmosphere. It might be best to avoid it in rooms where you want to unwind, such as bedrooms and studies.

Yellow

Yellow is all about sunshine! Perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, it can create energy and a happy aura. The key with yellow is to remember that less is more — too much of this bright color can be overwhelming and create feelings of frustration and anxiety.

Blue

If you need to unwind after spending time in a yellow room, head for the nearest blue wall. Lowering blood pressure and slowing your heart rate, blue is considered the most calming and relaxing of all wall-color choices. The most important factor in painting a blue room is to be careful with the hue — the room will seem cold if the blue is too bright, and can evoke feelings of sadness if it is too dark.

Green

Perhaps because it is reminiscent of nature, green is considered refreshing, restful and stress-relieving. From sage to forest green, green has a reputation for being soothing and helping people unwind. Out of all the colors, you can feel safe effectively using green paint in any room.

Purple

Historically associated with royalty, purple walls can add a rich and sophisticated tone to your home. It is also useful as a smaller accent color, adding depth to a room while putting a twist on black hues traditionally used for this purpose.

Why not hire a professional?

If you’ve gone to all that trouble to avoid painting your room a mind-meddling color, don’t burden yourself with the task of painting it yourself. Bid Boomerang makes it easy to find professional painters in Mesa, AZ, so all you have to do is select your color and leave the rest to the professionals.

Understanding your Car’s Air Conditioner

If your car’s air conditioner isn’t working, it could be for any number of reasons. Before you take your car to a repair technician, there are a few things you can easily check on your own, and hopefully fix the problem without having to pay someone else. One likely cause of a non-working air conditioner is a leak in the system. Many auto-supply stores carry a fluorescent dye that can be used to check for leaks without harming your system, so you don’t have to take the whole thing apart, check for leaks, and then attempt to put it back together again. If there is a bad leak, your system will have no pressure at all. Locate the low-side valve and use a gauge to check the PSI level.

where to check AC for leaks

Please keep in mind that checking your car’s refrigerant by poking something into the valve and then looking for leaks is illegal because it has the potential of leaking refrigerant into the atmosphere. Additionally, it is also illegal to put refrigerant into a system that has a known leak, because again it allows refrigerant to leak into the atmosphere. For this reason, if you are running low on refrigerant, you will probably have a hard time finding a repairman that will simply top you off without first checking for leaks.

Your car’s Air Conditioner is basically a refrigerator but with a strange layout. It is designed to take the hot air from inside your car and release it outside. Its main parts include a compressor to compress and circulate refrigerant, refrigerant to absorb hot air, a condenser to change the refrigerant from gas to liquid, an expansion valve to drop the pressure of the refrigerant liquid, and an evaporator to take the heat absorbed by the refrigerant and carry it outside your vehicle.

The basic idea behind any air conditioner is evaporation. When a liquid evaporates it feels cool; this can be demonstrated by applying rubbing alcohol to one’s skin. As the rubbing alcohol evaporates, you can feel its cooling effects on your skin. The refrigerant in your car is very similar to rubbing alcohol, but it evaporates at a very low temperature.

car AC layoutWhen the compressor puts the refrigerant under pressure, it begins to get very hot and is sent to the condenser coils (generally located in front of the radiator) where air from outside your car blows across it and cools it into a liquid.  The now liquid refrigerant is then taken through the expansion valve to the evaporator where it loses the pressure that the compressor had previously added and some of the liquid is changed to gas as it cools. At this point, the liquid evaporates and like the rubbing alcohol on your skin, it makes the evaporator coils very cold. A fan then blows air across the coils and that air is what cools your car down. As it evaporates, the liquid turns back into a gas and is sent to the compressor to start the process all over again.

Electricity Games

The topic of electricity can be boring and confusing, especially for a child. Instead of trying to explain the ins and outs of electricity to your kids, why not show them with these simple games?

Electricity Game #1

static electricity hairPut on a pair of clean socks and rub your feet against the carpet, the more you rub the more static electricity will be built up. You may even be able to make your own hair stand on end if you build up enough static. Touch one finger to a doorknob or other metal object to give yourself a shock, or touch a friend to pass the shock along to them!

Static electricity is the result of an imbalance between negative and positive charges in an object. As these charges build up on the surface of an object, they want to find a way to be released or discharged. This build up may be visible on a person when their hair begins to stand on end. Touching a metal object or another person releases these charges, creating a shock!

Electricity Game #2

static electricity baloonFirst, tie an inflated balloon to a long piece of thread and then tape the other end of the thread to a ceiling or doorway so that the balloon hangs down. Next, blow up a second balloon and rub it against your head until your hair stands on end. Slowly move the balloon in your hand toward the hanging balloon and watch it swing away from you without being touched. Moving the balloon toward a small, steady stream (such as one that would come from a sink faucet) will make the water bend without being touched, the same way the hanging balloon did.

This game works because rubbing a balloon on your head pulls electrons from your hair, causing the balloon to become negatively charged. A negatively charged balloon attracts positively charged objects, such as hair, other balloons, and running water.

Electricity Game #3

light bulb battery circuitExplain how a simple circuit can be created using only a battery, a light bulb and holder, tape, and two wires. Make sure that the socket holding the light bulb is a stand-alone ceramic one that has two exposed screws to attach the wires to. Help your kids attach one wire to each of the screws on the bulb holder, and then attach one of the wires to the positive end of the battery, and the other wire to the negative end. Once all of the connections have been made, the light bulb should light up, illustrating how a circuit works!

Ductless Air Conditioning

If your home doesn’t already have insulated ductwork, installing it can be a messy and expensive pain. Unfortunately, window units are typically very noisy, sometimes messy, waste a lot of energy turning on and off, and are a hassle to move. You may only have to move your unit twice a year when the seasons change, but if you live in a big city or other area where you don’t feel comfortable constantly leaving a window open, a window unit can cause a big problem. While window units may be a great way to keep your apartment or dorm room cool during the summer months, they aren’t nearly as practical for usage in a home.

Advantages of a Ductless Air Conditioning Unit

ductless split systemA ductless air conditioner, also sometimes called a mini-split system, can solve many of your air conditioning problems without requiring the installation of ductwork. With a ductless system, the indoor unit (the evaporator) can be mounted almost anywhere inside the home, no window required. The indoor unit is connected to the outdoor unit (the condenser) by a pair of refrigerant lines, one that delivers electricity and the other takes away condensate (water). Installation is very simple because there is no ductwork, the only permanent mark left by a ductless unit is a 3 ½” opening that is cut into an exterior wall for the refrigerant lines and some other wiring.

The biggest advantage of a ductless air conditioning system is probably its small size and flexibility as far as installation and cooling multiple rooms. The system can be installed virtually anywhere, high on a wall or even in the ceiling. Additionally, with some systems, one outdoor condenser can power up to four indoor components and each of those components can be controlled individually. This means that if one room gets to cool, the unit in that room can be turned off without affecting the temperature of the other rooms in the home. You can also turn off the unit in rooms that aren’t occupied in order to save energy and money.

According to the department of energy, a typical residential ducted system loses anywhere from 25 to 40% of its performance because of leaks caused by openings and disconnections within the ductwork, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space like an attic or basement. This can have a HUGE impact on your wallet. Because mini-split systems have no ducts, they can avoid the energy and money losses that are associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems.

The Pros and Cons of Cork Flooring

cork-flooring-living-room-eco-friendlyPerhaps one of the biggest reasons to choose cork flooring for your home is for its eco friendliness. Cork flooring is made from the bark of the cork oak tree, and is a renewable resource because it is harvested every nine years from trees that are at least 25 years old with a method that does not harm them and allows them to keep growing. But there are also other reasons to consider installing cork floors in your home.

To start with, cork has air in its cells so it presents a soft, comfortable feel for your feet, back, and legs. If you are a chef who spends a lot of time in the kitchen, or if you just generally spend a lot of time on your feet in your home, cork floors will prevent back and neck aches caused by standing on hard surfaces.

cork-tilesCork floors don’t have to look like typical cork, they come in a variety of patterns and styles and it is likely that your guests won’t even be able to tell that your floors are made of cork (although telling them would be a great way to start a conversation).

Cork is also a natural insulator, so the heat you bring into your home will stay there, and your floor will be warm to the touch. Insulating warmth also means insulating noise, so if you have loud downstairs neighbors, your floor will keep their noise to a minimum, and they won’t be able to hear you moving around either.

Cork’s natural properties keep it from rotting as it ages, and make it anti-allergenic and insect resistant (repelling insects, mites, and mold).  Cork is also naturally fire resistant, and while it will eventually burn under the right conditions, it will not release any toxic gasses.

While cork floors certainly have a lot going for them, there are some downsides that need to be taken into consideration. First, although cork is practically self-healing when it comes to small slits (such as one that would result from dropping a knife), it is a comparatively soft surface so if you have pets who like to sharpen their claws/dig, a cork floor is probably not the right choice for you.

Another problem is that while the floor will be soft and resilient, if you’re going to put heavy furniture on the floor you will need to take extra care not to leave permanent marks. Additionally, when it comes to spills, you will need to take about as much care to wipe up spills immediately as you would with hardwood.
