3 Creative Painting Techniques

The right combination of color and creativity can really transform the look of any room. Whether you want to create something that expresses your personality, or use painting techniques to make your home more interesting, here are a few ideas to add some creative flare to your home.

Rag Rolling

rag rollingRag rolling is a simple technique that can be used to create subtle or dramatic texture and everything in between and best of all, anyone can do it. You can use any combination of two colors, but I recommend using colors that are very similar for a more subtle look. Start with a basecoat that has little to no sheen and let it dry completely. Next, grab an old t-shirt that is made of 100% cotton and cut it up into several smaller rags. Any seams in your rags will be visible in your technique so cutting them out is a good idea. Pour some pearlized paint into your paint tray, crumple up your rag and lightly dip it in the paint and roll it onto the clean part of the tray to get all of the excess paint off. Before you begin applying the paint, make sure you have a very small amount on your rag and that it is evenly dispersed. Keeping the rag crumpled, place it against the wall and use your fingers to roll it up the wall a few inches and repeat. This technique works best if you roll in a different direction each time, and if you recrumple and change rags often.

Color Washing

Color WashingProbably the easiest creative painting technique, color washing can bring an elegant touch to otherwise boring walls. I recommend using a color that is not too different from the base coat, but feel free to use creative color combinations and be as unique as you want to be.

After your base coat is completely dry, dip a soft cloth or sponge into your painting glaze (a soft cloth will have a more subtle finished look, while a sponge will have a more textured look). Apply the glaze to your wall using random wiping and circular motion, just as if you were washing your wall. Continue until the entire surface is covered.

Stripes

wall stripesPainting stripes on your wall can achieve many different looks. For example, you can choose two contrasting colors in large blocks for a dramatic look, similar colors in smaller blocks for a soft, blended look, or many different colors in different size blocks for a fun, creative look. Once you have decided what colors and stripe pattern you want to use, use a pencil and ruler to make a small mark at the top and bottom of your wall where each line is going to be if you’re painting vertical stripes, or on the left and right sides of your wall if you are painting horizontal stripes. A laser level may help, but is not absolutely necessary.

Horizontal Stripes PaintApply painter’s tape, making sure that the marks on each side of your wall match up perfectly. Next, use a small brush to apply a thin line of acrylic gel medium along the edges of the tape, to keep each stripe from bleeding into the next. Paint each stripe and remove the painters tape before it dries, pulling slowly and taking care not to let the wet paint on the tape touch the wall.

Tips for Painting the Interior of your Home

Painting the interior of your home should be easy, but making one little mistake can have a huge negative impact on the outcome. A few little drips here and there could end up ruining your carpet, and forgetting to stir your paint before applying it could result in streaking once the paint has dried. Here are some basic tips and information to ensure you get it right the first time.

Before you begin your painting project, there are a few things you will need:

  • 2-3” brush for cutting in
  • 4-5’ brush for walls
  • Paint roller
  • Wide blade scraper
  • Putty and putty knife
  • Stirring stick
  • Paint and paint tray (with liners)
  • Drop cloths
  • Painter’s tape

Step 1 – Prep the wall

Begin by cleaning the surface you will be painting. If there is loose paint, use the scraper to remove any flakes and then wash the wall with water and let it dry thoroughly. If there are any cracks or holes in the wall, fill them in with the putty and knife. Lay the drop cloth across the floor, making sure it covers the point where the floor meets the wall and finally, apply painter’s tape to the boarder of the area you are going to paint.

Step 2 – Apply Primer

If you are repainting walls that are in good condition and you aren’t dramatically changing the color, you shouldn’t need to prime the wall first. However, if you do decide to use a primer, setup and application are the same as the paint application in step 3. If you are painting a light color over a dark color, use a high hiding primer. If you are painting a dark color over a light color, use a tintable primer.

Step 3 – Apply Paint

Next, you will want to cut in with a paint brush to ensure clean lines at the corners and edges. Working in small sections, use the trim brush to make short strokes away from the edges. For best results, apply two coats.

Finally, dip your roller into the paint-filled tray and make sure it is fully saturated, but not dripping (a few drips are ok), roll a 3 food wide “M” onto the wall and then fill in the “M” without lifting your roller from the wall. Do this across the entire room until the wall is fully covered and again, apply two coats for best results.

Tips for Painting Stucco

Stucco has a very high level of texture and is typically done with some kind of plaster or cement on the outside of the home, or mud on the inside. It is typical of Mexican or South Western style homes and many people think that because stucco has so many nooks and crannies it is impossible to paint yourself but this is just simply not true. Painting stucco is very similar to painting a normal wall, with just a few subtle differences.

In this picture the texture of the stucco is plainly visible. Looking at this picture it is easy to see why the idea of painting stucco can be so daunting, because it seems like it would be very difficult to get complete coverage, but it’s really not as hard as you might think.

Getting Started

Before you put a fresh coat of paint over your stucco, there are some things you should keep in mind. First, although painting your home yourself will save you money (hiring a professional will likely cost somewhere between $500 and $600 while doing it yourself should only cost about $150) it will also take up a lot of your time which is also valuable. Some people may find that the trade off just isn’t worth it. As an estimate, count on taking at least 16 hours for a 1,000 square foot home, and that’s if you are a somewhat experienced painter. If you’ve never painted a wall before, it could take a lot longer.

Second, ordinary house paint will seal the pores on stucco and as the stucco expands and contracts, the paint will crack and water will be able to get inside. Before long, your home will be covered in patches of bare stucco which is very unattractive. To avoid this, make sure you use elastomeric paint, which is formulated especially for stucco. It will expand and contract with the stucco and resist cracking while also allowing moisture to get out.

Painting Your Home

The first thing you’re going to want to do is clean the dirt out of the crevasses in the stucco with a power washer and siding cleaner. Avoid blasting the wall with the power washer on high, as it could ruin the stucco; a gentle cleaning is all you need.
Next you will want to patch any cracks in the siding with an acrylic latex caulk or stucco mix to seal any openings. Prime the patched areas and let them dry before painting. If the stucco doesn’t already have paint on it, you will want to clean and prime the entire surface before beginning.

Apply the paint liberally with a good quality bristle brush or a thick masonry roller (the heavier the better). Keep in mind that because of all the texture, paint gets used up a lost faster on stucco so there’s a good chance you will use more paint than anticipated.

Dip your brush or roller into the paint and force it into the wall’s surface until it is completely covered. Make sure you push the paint into all of the little cracks and smooth it around as you go, painting just as you would any other wall.
Finally, when painting stucco your roller will often become filled with parts of the wall that have flaked off, and the nappier your brush is the more likely it is that this will happen. When the debris starts to build up and get in your way, it is probably best to replace the bush rather than try to wash it out.

The Right Interior Paint Colors for Your Home

Interior paint colors can be used to reflect your taste and showcase or downplay your home’s features. The color you choose can affect the mood of each room, so it’s really about what you want the room to feel like. But choosing a color doesn’t have to be overwhelming, here are a few tips on how to choose the best colors for your home.

Step 1 – Define your Home’s Color Palette.

paint palette

Buy a fan deck from your local paint store so that you can physically see all of the paint colors available. Using the fan deck, match up a paint color to each of the main objects in the room you are painting.  This could be furniture, paintings, accent pieces, or even curtains. If you’re feeling bold, you may want to take the predominant color from a favorite object in the room and base the palette on that. Use these colors to create a color palette that compliments your home.

Step 2 – Choose Colors that Work Together

matching colors

Use colors to join rooms together, always being careful to consider the sight lines in your home. The more connected your rooms are, the more alike each of their palettes should be to keep from creating discord. For example, you wouldn’t want to paint your master bedroom green and its adjoining bathroom purple. Instead, use colors that will work in harmony with one another.

Remember that while you may initially love a bold color on your walls, it’s likely that you will get tired of it before long. If there is a bold color that you really want to use, just use it as an accent. Using trendy colors can also date a room. To avoid this, try using neutral colors on the walls and reserving the bold colors for accents that can be more easily switched out (throw billows, artwork, and other decorations).

Step 3- Try Before you Buy

Buying paint samples and trying them out in each room can be time consuming and expensive. Before you buy anything, try using online software to help you visualize how your home will look. http://www.homestyler.com/ has design software that allows you to create floor plans, add furniture, and choose color options that compliment the overall look of your home.

Additionally, the ColorSmart software at http://www.behr.com/Behr/ allows you to choose colors and schemes, and even suggests complimentary colors to help you visualize what your home will look like.

Choosing The Right House Paint

Finding the right color of paint for your home is only the first challenge. Once you’ve decided on a color then there are hundreds of brands to choose from. If you’re stuck trying to decide which color to go with then there are a few things you can do:

  • First you’ll want to do your best to narrow it down to 3-4 colors. If you have 30 potential colors you’re just going to make extra stress for yourself.
  • Next it’s smart to try painting a test strip. Put about one square foot of each color on the wall. By getting the colors up on the wall it can help you to better see the whole picture and get a feel for what you like the most.
  • Get as much light in the room as possible. It is important to see the room at its brightest when you are considering colors so that you don’t get something on the wall and have it look different unexpectedly.

What If I’m Not An Experienced Painter?

Everyone who has tried painting an entire room knows how time consuming it can be. The most time will be spent prepping the room. You’ll want to make sure that you tape everything off and cover any carpet areas with something like a tarp that you don’t mind getting dirty.

From there on out you will start to feel like you’re making more progress but keep in mind that painting takes years to get good at. The more you do it the easier it will get.

What If I Don’t Have Time to Paint?

If you’re schedule doesn’t allow much time for painting or if you just find it painfully tedious, then hiring a professional painter is the way to go. With their expertise you can rest assured that the job will be done right the first time so that you don’t have to waste money on extra paint or your personal time.
